We asked our children about their favourite destinations and attractions for family trips. Their opinions were surprising.

UK attractions:

The most surprising result was that the only UK attraction that both children rated in their top ten was the relatively unknown Wollaton Hall on the outskirts of Nottingham.

Families that have visited Wollaton Hall will possibly agree. Wollaton is a sixteenth century building which houses a fascinating natural history museum including interactive displays. The stable block has been coverted into an industrial museum, with a small gallery which hosts displays of art and photography. All this within a large park with sports and play facilities as well as a lake. There is something for everyone.

Rated by one or the other in the top ten were Cornwall, Legoland, Trigby Hall (Norfolk) and The Deep (Hull).

On reflection the children thought that the Natural History Museum and Bosworth Battlefield should be mentioned.

Boat trips:

Boat trips were especially popular. The favourites were the Rhine (from Cologne) and the canal boat ride at Bruges, Belgium. The Dolphinarium at Bruges was also popular - so remember that for families there is more to the city of Bruges than the central square with it’s historic buildings.

The Danube boat trip at Budapest was popular. We visit our house in the Danube Delta area of Romania every year, and the children included two boat trips on their list, a rowing boat trip on Lake Somova to see Pelicans or fish and a full day Danube Delta boat trip.
